Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 18 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) hinted on Wednesday that the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections might be carried out in a single phase, prioritizing voter convenience and existing local circumstances.
An ECI delegation, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, is currently evaluating poll preparations in Assam. This visit included discussions with state officials and representatives from various political parties.
The Commission also suggested that elections could take place prior to the Rongali Bihu festival, which is one of Assam's most celebrated cultural events, to maximize voter turnout and ensure smooth elections.
During the press briefing, CEC Gyanesh Kumar stated that the Election Commission is dedicated to conducting elections in a manner that is friendly to voters. All logistical and security components are being meticulously evaluated before finalizing the election schedule.
"The Commission will make a decision considering the comfort of voters, climatic factors, and the overall readiness of the administration," Kumar remarked.
In a significant move towards modernization, the Election Commission announced that Assam will experience complete webcasting of polling stations for the first time. This initiative aims to bolster transparency and guarantee free and fair elections throughout the state.
Moreover, the Commission plans to release real-time data regarding voter turnout at consistent intervals.
"The actual voting percentage will be provided every two hours on polling day," Kumar added, noting that this strategy would aid in reducing misinformation and provide reliable updates to the public.
The ECI team is also assessing security measures, the deployment of central armed police forces, and the operational readiness of election machinery at the district level.
This visit forms part of the Commission's standard procedure before major elections to evaluate ground-level preparedness and address concerns raised by various stakeholders.
The Election Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting peaceful, transparent, and inclusive elections in Assam, ensuring that every eligible voter can exercise their democratic right without fear or inconvenience.
