Australia Imposes Ban on Iranian Temporary Visa Holders Amid Middle East Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Canberra, March 26 (NationPress) The Australian government has taken action to prevent temporary visa holders from Iran from entering the country due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
On Wednesday evening, Tony Burke, the Minister for Home Affairs, declared that he has invoked legislation approved by the federal parliament in March to impose a temporary ban on Iranian visitor visa holders from entering Australia.
In his statement, he emphasized that this decision aims to maintain the integrity and sustainability of Australia's migration framework, expressing concerns that the ongoing conflict could lead to some visitors from Iran being unable or unwilling to leave Australia when their visas expire.
This six-month ban specifically targets individuals holding a subclass 600 visitor visa connected to an Iranian passport. It will not affect those already in Australia, nor spouses or children of Australian citizens or permanent residents, or parents of children under 18 who are already in the country.
The subclass 600 visa permits holders to remain in Australia for up to 12 months for tourism or family visits.
Burke remarked, "Numerous visitor visas were granted prior to the conflict in Iran that likely would not have been approved if applied for now."
He noted that the government is actively monitoring global events and will modify policies as needed to ensure that Australia's migration system remains orderly, fair, and sustainable.
Continued assessment of visa applications will occur, and a limited number of affected individuals from Iran may still be permitted to enter Australia, especially in cases involving parents of Australian citizens, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
The government has stated that a select group of travelers may still gain entry on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants can pursue exemptions through special travel permissions, particularly in compelling or humanitarian situations.
