Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Oct 25 (NationPress) BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla has voiced his dismay over the alarming incident involving the molestation of Australia’s women cricketers that occurred recently in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The Australian squad is currently in Indore participating in their ongoing Women’s World Cup match against South Africa at the Holkar Stadium.
During their walk to a nearby café from their hotel, two Australian players, whose identities remain undisclosed, faced an unfortunate incident. A man on a motorcycle harassed them, inappropriately touching one of the athletes before fleeing the scene. However, swift action was taken after the team’s security manager lodged a police report, resulting in the perpetrator's arrest.
In response to this incident, Shukla expressed his concern, stating to IANS:
“This is a deeply regrettable incident. No one could have anticipated something like this, and it should never happen to anyone. While a robust security system is already in place for all visiting teams during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, we will further strengthen it to ensure such incidents are not repeated. The police have arrested the accused, and we trust that the law will take its proper course to deliver justice. We are confident that the remainder of the World Cup will proceed smoothly and safely.”
The shocking occurrence has incited global outrage. Following this distressing event, the Australian team has reportedly been granted enhanced security measures. This incident has cast a pall over what has otherwise been a highly competitive Women’s ODI World Cup, reigniting international concerns regarding the safety of female athletes in India.
Authorities apprehended the suspect on Khajrana Road. After analyzing CCTV footage, hotel records, and testimonials from security staff, police identified and arrested Aqeel Khan, who has a history of prior criminal involvement.
"The suspect's motorcycle perfectly matched the eyewitness description and number plate. Khan has previous criminal cases registered against him, and an investigation is ongoing," police stated.
