Kalighat Police OC Gautam Das suspended over gun photo on social media
Kolkata Police on Saturday, 2 May suspended Kalighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Gautam Das following a controversy over a social media photograph that showed him holding a machine gun inside the police station. Chameli Mukherjee has been appointed in his place, according to officials.
What the Photograph Showed
The image, which circulated on social media, shows Gautam Das seated on his chair at the police station in full uniform, holding what is described as a sophisticated firearm. The photograph was reportedly shared by Das himself on his Facebook and WhatsApp status with the caption 'Ready for new responsibility', according to All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) state vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar. The post on the Facebook ID cited by Majumdar has since been deleted.
Trinamool Flags It to Election Commission
Majumdar posted the photograph on Friday and stated that he had written letters to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agrawal, and Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand, flagging the image as objectionable. He said,
