Krishna Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, under the oppressive reign of King Kansa, Devaki's brother.
Kansa had imprisoned his sister and brother-in-law, fearing a prophecy that foretold his demise at the hands of Devaki's eighth son.
