All 10 candidates contesting the Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) elections — covering nine vacant seats and one by-election seat — were declared elected unopposed on Thursday, 11 June 2025, in Patna. The sweep, spanning the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), prompted an outpouring of gratitude from newly elected members toward their respective party leaderships.

Nishant Kumar's pledge to continue developmental legacy

Minister Nishant Kumar, son of former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and a Janata Dal (United) leader, was among those declared elected. He said: 'I express my heartfelt thanks to my party for trusting me; I will try to live up to that trust and perform my duties sincerely. I will work towards taking ahead the developmental works of my father, Nitish Kumar.'

Kumar further committed to prioritising women's empowerment, health, and education — areas closely associated with Nitish Kumar's tenure as Chief Minister. 'We will try to make Bihar a developed state,' he added.

JD-U, BJP, and LJP-RV winners speak out

JD-U leader Lalan Prasad, elected from the seat previously held by former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, struck a measured note. 'I am a party worker and will keep working like that. Moreover, I will draw the attention of Ministers to works that have been left incomplete in various parts of the state,' he said.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sanjay Mayukh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Nitin Nabin, and Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. He noted that he, along with Anil Thakur and Sheila Pandit, had been declared elected. BJP candidate and Bhojpuri actor Pawan Singh was also declared elected unopposed.

Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV) leader Ashraf Ansari credited party president Chirag Paswan for the trust placed in him. 'This trust is itself a responsibility,' he said, adding that with Paswan's backing, no challenge was insurmountable.

RJD vows to raise opposition voice in the House

RJD leader Sunil Singh said his election certificate reflected the confidence placed in him by party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav. Despite the RJD's limited strength of 15 in the Council, Singh pledged to 'raise issues related to farmers, unemployment, minorities, and Dalit brothers very strongly in the House.'

'The Bihar government will have to listen to our voice,' he asserted.

What this means for Bihar's legislative balance

The unopposed elections reflect the arithmetic of pre-negotiated seat-sharing within the NDA as well as the RJD's controlled fielding of candidates. Notably, the seat vacated by Nitish Kumar himself — now filled by Lalan Prasad — carries symbolic weight, underscoring the JD-U's intent to preserve continuity in the Upper House. With the new members set to take their oaths, attention will turn to whether the opposition's 15-member bloc can meaningfully check the NDA's majority in the Council.
