Bihar Police Headquarters on Monday, 27 July released a detailed account of the law-and-order breakdown that swept several districts of the state on 25 July, when student organisations and student wings of political parties staged protests, demonstrations, and marches. A total of 694 people were detained statewide, including a significant number of students and minors, as violence marred what began as agitation across multiple districts.

Detentions and Court Proceedings

Of the 694 individuals taken into custody, 339 minors and students were released after verification by authorities. The remaining 355 individuals, allegedly involved in violent incidents, were produced before a court in accordance with legal procedure. Officials confirmed that the roles of those produced are under active investigation, and further legal action will follow based on findings.

Police Casualties and Property Damage

According to the police statement, 91 police officers and personnel sustained injuries in incidents involving stone-pelting, direct attacks on police, damage to government property, and other acts of violence. Among the injured are the Superintendents of Police (SPs) of Siwan and Sitamarhi, two Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs), and several Station House Officers (SHOs). The SHO of Gandhi Maidan police station reportedly sustained critical injuries. In addition, 14 government vehicles were damaged and one government vehicle was set on fire during the unrest. 13 civilians were also reported injured across the state.

Worst-Hit: Violence in Saran District

The police report described the situation in Saran district as particularly grave. The Block Development Officer (BDO) of Sadar Block suffered critical injuries and reportedly lost vision in one eye following an attack. He is currently undergoing treatment at IGIMS, Patna. The BDO of Revelganj Block in Saran was also allegedly attacked and sustained a severe head injury, subsequently undergoing surgery at Medanta Hospital, where he remains under medical supervision. Both officers are described as being in critical condition.

Police Response and Ongoing Action

The Bihar Police Headquarters stated in its official release that incidents of violence, damage to public property, and attacks on police and administrative officials carried out under the cover of protests are being treated with the utmost seriousness. Authorities said those responsible are being identified through available evidence, with legal proceedings already underway. Police reiterated that all necessary measures are being taken to restore and maintain law and order across the state.

This comes amid a broader pattern of student unrest in several Indian states, where competitive examination grievances and political mobilisation have periodically spilled into street confrontations. The scale of detentions and the severity of injuries to senior officials signal that authorities are treating the 25 July violence as a significant law-and-order challenge requiring sustained follow-up action.
