Agartala, Dec 27 (NationPress) The Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly and four-time MLA, Biswa Bandhu Sen, who sadly passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Friday after receiving medical care for over four months, is set to be cremated with full state honours in his home town of Dharmanagar on Sunday.

Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath stated that Sen's remains were returned to Agartala from Bengaluru on Saturday and subsequently taken to the premises of the Tripura Legislative Assembly at the Capital Complex, where numerous leaders and citizens paid their final respects.

Among those who paid their respects were Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Chief Minister Manik Saha, Minister Nath alongside cabinet members, Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) Tripura state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul, leaders from various political parties, and representatives from different organizations.

Floral tributes were also offered on behalf of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.

The Tripura State Rifles (TSR) provided a final salute with reversed arms, honoring the 72-year-old veteran legislator and politician.

Sen’s passing has cast a shadow over Tripura’s political scene, with leaders from all parties mourning the loss of a prominent politician, legislator, and Assembly Speaker.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. Chief Minister Saha remarked that Sen’s death represents a significant loss for the BJP and the people of Tripura.

He emphasized that as Assembly Speaker, Sen executed his duties with efficiency and facilitated House proceedings with fairness and remarkable competence.

The Tripura government has declared a three-day period of state mourning from December 26 to 28 in his honor.

During this mourning period, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout the state, and no official entertainment events will take place. All state government offices, including those outside Tripura, public sector undertakings, and educational institutions were closed on Friday as a sign of respect.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP National Working President Nitin Nabin, and numerous other leaders expressed their condolences over Sen’s passing.

Sen suffered an internal brain hemorrhage on August 8 at Agartala railway station while preparing to board a train to his hometown of Dharmanagar.

Initially, he was admitted to Tripura Medical College, where he underwent emergency surgery, later being transferred to a private hospital in Agartala, and subsequently to Bengaluru on August 11 for advanced treatment.

On the Chief Minister’s initiative, two doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, evaluated Sen’s condition and reviewed the treatment protocols at both Tripura Medical College and the private hospital in Agartala.

Sen’s son, Arijit Sen, who is also a doctor, expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and medical teams for their management of his father's initial treatment.

Biswa Bandhu Sen was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly on four occasions—twice from Dharmanagar in North Tripura district on a Congress ticket in 2008 and 2013, and subsequently in 2018 and 2023 as a BJP candidate from the same constituency.
