Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 9 (NationPress) Ananta Deb Adhikari, the BJP candidate for the Jalpaiguri Sadar constituency, has formally lodged a complaint against Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress. The complaint, filed on Thursday, claims that Banerjee made offensive remarks targeting Adhikari during an election rally in Jalpaiguri district.
Accompanied by his legal team, Adhikari reported the matter to the Kotwali police station, asserting that the statements made by Banerjee had damaged his reputation and misled the electorate.
The incident allegedly occurred on Tuesday when Banerjee was in Jalpaiguri to support the party's candidate, Krishna Das.
During his speech, Banerjee directed personal attacks at the BJP candidate, claiming, "The BJP candidate from Jalpaiguri Sadar appears to be in a constant state of discontent. He is often seen inebriated and has a problematic relationship with alcohol. Furthermore, he displays inappropriate behavior towards women and engages in disrespectful talk."
In response, the BJP organized a protest march in Jalpaiguri city on Tuesday night. Adhikari warned that he would pursue legal action unless Banerjee issued an apology, prompting the filing of the complaint.
Adhikari emphasized his legal background, stating, "I graduated with an LLB from Jalpaiguri Law College in 2002 and became a member of the Jalpaiguri Bar Association the following year. As a proud member of the Rajbanshi community, I have dedicated my career to the legal profession. Banerjee's intentional personal attack aimed to influence the voters against me, fostering animosity and spreading falsehoods that have tarnished my image. Hence, I have taken this action."
According to Soujit Singh, a member of the BJP's legal cell, Banerjee has infringed upon the model code of conduct for the Assembly elections, and this issue has been reported to the Election Commission.
