Did BJP Candidate R. Sreelekha Breach Election Conduct Rules?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 9 (NationPress) A controversy has surfaced on polling day in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation after the BJP candidate from Sasthamangalam, former Director General of Police, R. Sreelekha, allegedly shared a pre-election survey result on social media, contravening the Model Code of Conduct.
The post, which suggested that the BJP-led NDA had a lead in the corporation, faced intense backlash from various political factions, with State Education Minister V. Sivankutty labeling it a blatant violation of election protocols.
Sivankutty asserted that disclosing pre-election survey results on polling day is explicitly forbidden by the Election Commission, calling the act “a serious infringement”.
In light of the criticism, Sreelekha promptly removed the contentious post from her social media account.
The survey graphic, which was labeled as a pre-poll survey, claimed that the BJP-led NDA held an advantage in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
The situation has escalated, with the State Election Commission reportedly taking the matter seriously and forwarding it to the Cyber Wing of the Kerala Police for further investigation.
In response, Sivankutty dismissed Sreelekha’s assertion that the BJP could secure up to 60 seats in the corporation, calling it a demonstration of “political ignorance”.
He implied that there was vote trading between the UDF and the BJP during the previous election.
“These events will not hinder the LDF’s chances of victory. The LDF will continue to govern the corporation,” he claimed. This is not the first time Sreelekha has found herself in controversy during the campaign; earlier, there were complaints regarding her use of the title ‘IPS’ on campaign materials, which also allegedly breached election regulations.
The incident has heightened political tensions on a critical polling day in the capital city, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of trying to sway voters through illicit campaign strategies while voting is in progress.
In the outgoing Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, out of 100 wards, the CPI(M)-led Left Front held 51 seats, the BJP-led NDA had 35, with the Congress-led UDF and Independents occupying the rest.
