Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 5 (NationPress) The former Director General of Police (DGP) of Kerala and current Bharatiya Janata Party Councillor, R. Sreelekha, has dispelled all media rumors suggesting she was dissatisfied about not being appointed as the Thiruvananthapuram Mayor. She expressed her support for the party's choice of V.V. Rajesh for the Mayor position, which the party secured with a significant victory margin in the recent civic body elections conducted in the state.
Following the BJP's remarkable win, V.V. Rajesh has now been elected as the first BJP Mayor of Kerala.
“I endorse the party’s decision and have no intention to resign or contest against it,” Sreelekha stated to IANS.
The BJP took control of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation in the elections held in December, marking the end of a 40-year governance by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).
“I am committed to serving as a Councillor for the entire five-year term and will not abandon my responsibilities to the voters who placed their trust in me,” Sreelekha conveyed to IANS.
Additionally, she dismissed the idea of running in the Kerala Assembly elections, despite recent suggestions from BJP leaders that she might be fielded from a prominent constituency as compensation for not being selected as the Thiruvananthapuram Mayor.
Sreelekha noted that the party might have concluded that Rajesh could fulfill the role of Mayor more effectively than she could.
In a discussion with the media, Sreelekha, who serves as the state BJP Vice-President, revealed that she did not initially plan to contest but decided to enter the race after receiving guarantees from party leadership about her appointment as Mayor of the state capital.
The BJP Councillor mentioned she was uninformed about the decision-making process regarding the Mayoral position following the party's electoral success.
Previously, Sreelekha's comments concerning the Thiruvananthapuram mayoral position had sparked a political uproar within the party, which is optimistic about the upcoming Assembly elections in the state later this year.
