Should Birth Certificates Be Trusted for Voter Registration in West Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 3 (NationPress) As the initial phase of the three-part Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal is about to commence on Tuesday, the BJP has called upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to tread carefully regarding the acceptance of birth certificates issued in the state post June 24, 2025, as legitimate documents for voter registration during this revision process.
In a communication sent to the ECI on Monday, the BJP leadership proposed various precautionary actions to be implemented during the SIR in West Bengal, with the issue of birth certificates being a top priority.
The BJP has observed a significant increase in postponed registrations across West Bengal since birth certificates were acknowledged as valid documents for voter registration. There have been numerous reports of backdated certificates allegedly being issued in collusion with local officials and political affiliates.
Consequently, the BJP has requested that the ECI refrain from accepting birth certificates issued in West Bengal after June 24, 2025, for SIR purposes unless each one is verified individually by booth-level officers (BLOs) prior to acceptance.
Additionally, the BJP has cautioned the Commission against the acceptance of permanent residence certificates issued by local authorities.
"These certificates are being distributed indiscriminately by local entities under the influence of political figures. In many instances, they are merely based on Aadhaar or EPIC cards, which themselves face questions regarding their authenticity. Only certificates that are issued and properly signed by Group-A officers should be considered valid. Moreover, each certificate must undergo cross-verification by contacting the issuing authority to ensure authenticity and residency," the BJP's communication to the ECI stated.
The party further urged the Commission to disregard caste certificates as valid registration documents without thorough investigation or verification. For OBC-A certificates issued between 2011 and 2024, the BJP recommended that such certificates be excluded from acceptable documentation pending a conclusive judicial decision.
