Is the BJP Targeting the Miya-Muslim Community?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 27 (NationPress) Congress MLA Rakibuddin Ahmed launched a strong critique against the BJP on Tuesday, accusing the ruling party of engaging in divisive politics by specifically targeting the Miya-Muslim community. He raised significant concerns regarding alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls at the Boko-Chaygaon Co-District Commissioner’s office.
Speaking to the media in Goraimari, situated in Assam’s Chamaria constituency, Ahmed condemned what he termed a continuous political narrative intended to alienate Miya-Muslims. He emphasized that Assam has a rich history of peaceful coexistence among diverse ethnicities, religions, and languages, warning that any attempt to ostracize a community could undermine the state’s social harmony.
The Congress representative vehemently opposed efforts to associate language with nationality, describing assertions that link Bengali speakers to a Bangladeshi identity as “entirely baseless”. He highlighted that Bengali is spoken in various Indian regions, including Tripura, West Bengal, and parts of Assam like Hojai, arguing that language should not serve as a criterion to label anyone as an outsider.
Ahmed accused the BJP of intentionally creating divisions based on caste, religion, and community for electoral gain, asserting that the Congress has never adopted such a tactic. He stated that politics founded on exclusion and distrust is detrimental to democratic principles and social unity.
He also referred to an incident at the Boko-Chaygaon Co-District Commissioner’s office, which reportedly took place on January 22 and subsequently gained public attention. He alleged that BJP-affiliated leaders were involved in manipulating voter lists, calling it a serious infringement of democratic norms.
Relating this incident to wider concerns about electoral integrity, Ahmed reiterated previous claims made by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding vote manipulation. He expressed that this episode underscores a disturbing trend that threatens to erode public trust in the electoral process. The Congress has reached out to the Election Commission of India, demanding a thorough and impartial investigation.
He assured that the Congress would continue to address this issue and would not remain silent against any efforts to sway elections through unlawful or unethical means.
