Is There a 'Massive Voter Fraud' Conspiracy in Assam Targeting BJP Minister?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Congress party in Assam has raised allegations against the BJP government, claiming it is orchestrating a dangerous scheme to alter the state’s electoral demographics by allegedly incorporating “outsider voters” through a Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls.
Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, contended that the ruling BJP, motivated by its insatiable hunger for power, has begun to secretly manipulate voter lists due to its perceived political vulnerability, despite previously asserting that delimitation would protect the interests of the indigenous population.
In a pointed statement, Saikia asserted that a senior BJP leader and state minister is significantly involved in this alleged scheme, which he characterized as a betrayal of the Assam Accord’s spirit.
Quoting an instance from Guwahati’s Tayabulla Road, Saikia claimed that nearly 80 individuals from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were found registered as voters from a single small room.
He labeled this incident as “evidence” that the BJP is attempting to emulate what he termed the “Haryana model” of electoral manipulation in Assam.
The Opposition leader further accused the ruling party of planning to introduce between 5,000 and 10,000 non-local voters in each constituency to influence electoral results and permanently shift Assam’s demographic composition.
“The government must respond to how such extensive irregularities are occurring under its oversight,” Saikia stated.
He also charged the BJP with pursuing a “fascist agenda” that threatens to undermine Assam’s linguistic and cultural identity by enforcing a “one nation, one language” policy, cautioning that such actions could have severe long-term repercussions for the state.
Saikia urged the populace of Assam to stay alert, alleging that the BJP has resorted to financial influence, vote-buying, and voter list manipulation to maintain its grip on power.
He emphasized that the Opposition “strongly condemns” what it perceives as the ruling party’s “double standards” and will persist in opposing any efforts to undermine Assam’s identity and democratic integrity.
