Guwahati, Feb 18 (NationPress) Senior Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, firmly dismissed any possibility of joining the BJP on Wednesday.

This declaration has quelled significant political rumors that arose after recent statements made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the anticipated defection of former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah.

Saikia’s comments were prompted by Sarma’s claims regarding the potential for more Congress leaders to switch allegiance to the BJP in light of Borah's planned transition to the ruling party on February 22.

While not explicitly naming Sarma, Saikia expressed his past admiration for a particular leader's simplicity and character, only to feel let down by remarks that he believed disrespected the sentiments of the Assamese populace.

He pointed out that the same leader has since recognized the warmth and inclusive spirit of Assamese society, suggesting a partial shift in perspective.

Nonetheless, Saikia emphasized that ideological differences remain unbridgeable. “In the name of Gandhian ideology, I cannot endorse any political approach that seeks to divide the Assamese community,” he asserted, decisively rejecting the BJP’s advances.

He reaffirmed his commitment to never join the BJP under any circumstances, declaring the matter “closed.”

Amid the ongoing turmoil within the Congress, Saikia highlighted the valuable lessons learned from senior leaders throughout his tenure in the Assembly, asserting that real political advancement is achieved through persistent struggle, rather than what he termed “shortcuts.”

His remarks are interpreted as a direct counter to Sarma’s assertion that many Congress leaders, including Saikia, were in discussions with the BJP and might defect soon.

Sarma has also suggested that the Congress party in Assam is facing organizational collapse, especially following Borah's departure. With Borah's imminent joining of the BJP on February 22, Saikia’s clear stance positions him as one of the few senior Congress figures attempting to maintain ideological integrity during a time of significant political instability for the party in Assam.

Point of View

Saikia’s firm stance against joining the BJP amidst political turmoil emphasizes the need for ideological consistency within parties. His commitment to Gandhian values highlights the importance of unity over division, particularly in a diverse region like Assam. As political dynamics shift, Saikia's actions may set a precedent for others facing similar dilemmas.
