Are More Senior Congress Leaders About to Leave the Party? Insights from Assam CM Sarma
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 16 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted on Monday that additional senior leaders from the Congress party are likely to exit following the resignation of Bhupen Borah. He emphasized that the historic political entity has become increasingly irrelevant for both Hindus and the general Assamese populace.
After Borah’s resignation, CM Sarma informed reporters that Pradyut Bordoloi, a notable Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP, is also anticipated to depart from the party.
“Pradyut Bordoloi will leave the Congress before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections,” the Chief Minister asserted.
CM Sarma also predicted that senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia would align with the BJP after the 2026 Assembly elections, stating, “After the 2026 elections, Debabrata Saikia will join the BJP. I will personally reach out to his mother to facilitate this transition.”
Commenting on Bhupen Borah’s resignation, CM Sarma highlighted that this action reveals the ongoing crisis within the Congress.
He mentioned plans to meet Borah soon, saying, “I will meet Bhupen Borah tomorrow,” though he did not clarify the purpose of their meeting.
In a pointed critique of the Congress, the Chief Minister contended that the party no longer champions the interests of the Assamese people.
“A Hindu and a common Assamese individual cannot remain in the Congress party anymore,” he commented, accusing the Congress of alienating its traditional supporters through ineffective policies and leadership.
According to CM Sarma, the Congress leadership is out of touch with its grassroots members and lacks the capacity to make crucial organizational decisions.
This disconnect has led to growing discontent among both senior leaders and party workers.
He stated that the BJP is gaining momentum in Assam as leaders and workers from opposition parties recognize that progress and stability are only attainable under BJP-led governance at both the national and state levels.
Bhupen Borah, a seasoned Congress leader with over three decades of experience, resigned earlier today, citing personal dignity and organizational failures, which has sparked significant political reactions throughout Assam.
Political analysts believe that the Chief Minister’s comments aim to exert pressure on the Congress at a time when it is grappling with internal strife ahead of the pivotal Assembly elections.
