Will Assam LoP Saikia Join BJP Amidst Congress Turmoil?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 18 (NationPress) Senior Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Debabrata Saikia firmly stated on Wednesday that he will not be joining the BJP, aiming to dispel rampant political rumors ignited by recent comments from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the anticipated defection of former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah.
Saikia’s declaration comes amid CM Sarma’s ongoing claims that additional Congress leaders are poised to defect to the BJP following Borah’s planned entry into the ruling party on February 22, a situation that has intensified the turmoil within the state Congress.
While not directly addressing CM Sarma, Saikia remarked that he once appreciated the simplicity and character of a certain leader but later felt let down by statements that, in his view, offended the sentiments of the Assamese populace.
He noted that the same leader later acknowledged the warmth and inclusive spirit of Assamese society, suggesting a slight shift in stance. However, Saikia emphasized that their ideological differences remain unbridgeable.
“In the name of Gandhian ideology, I cannot back any form of politics that creates divisions among the Assamese people,” he firmly rejected the BJP’s political strategy.
He affirmed that he will not join the BJP under any circumstances and termed the matter “closed.”
In a pointed statement amid the ongoing turbulence within the Congress, Saikia expressed his appreciation for the mentorship he received from senior leaders throughout his time in the Assembly, but he believes that genuine political progress arises from persistent struggle rather than what he described as “shortcuts.”
His comments are perceived as a direct counter to CM Sarma’s assertion that numerous Congress leaders, including Saikia, were in contact with the BJP leadership and might switch allegiance soon.
CM Sarma has also publicly asserted that the Congress party in Assam is on the verge of organizational collapse, particularly following Borah’s departure.
With Borah ready to officially join the BJP on February 22, Saikia’s clear stance positions him as one of the rare senior Congress leaders striving to maintain ideological integrity and internal opposition at a time when the party’s Assam unit faces unprecedented political decline.
