Bokaro, Aug 20 (NationPress) Tension escalated in Jharkhand's Bokaro district on Wednesday as a longstanding conflict over local employment at a private steel company ignited violent confrontations between villagers, law enforcement, and company representatives.
The altercation resulted in Siyaljory police station chief Manish Kumar sustaining a severe head injury, necessitating immediate hospitalization.
The unrest revolves around Vedanta Electrosteel Company in the Chandankiyari block, where residents from neighboring areas like Chandaha, Siyaljory, and Bhagabandh have been demanding preferential treatment for job opportunities.
They contend that despite multiple assurances, the company has consistently hired outsiders, leaving local youth without employment.
Under the banner of the Jharkhand Shoshan Mukti Ulgulan Manch, hundreds of villagers gathered at Alkusha on Wednesday morning for a pre-planned protest, effectively halting traffic on the main road for hours.
Upon learning of the demonstration, station chief Manish Kumar arrived with police reinforcements and requested the protestors to lift the blockade.
He assured them that discussions would be initiated with the company’s management. However, the villagers demanded that company officials be present to provide written guarantees.
The situation deteriorated when heated exchanges led to physical altercations. As the crowd grew larger, police resorted to using batons to disperse the protestors, leading to further violence. During this chaos, the station chief was gravely injured.
In response to the unrest, authorities deployed additional police units around the plant and nearby villages to avert further clashes. While the situation is currently stabilized, discontent continues to brew among the villagers.
This incident is not the first conflict between the locals and the company. Previously, villagers have protested for equitable employment, adequate compensation for the displaced, and fulfillment of commitments made during land acquisition.
