Kollam, July 17 (NationPress) In a heartbreaking event, a 13-year-old boy tragically lost his life due to electrocution while attempting to retrieve his footwear from the rooftop of a school in Kerala on Thursday.
Prior to the start of classes at the state-funded Boys School, Thevelekkara, students were playing on the ground when one child's footwear became stuck atop the roof.
An electric line ran over the area where the footwear was located.
Mithun, a student in Class 8, climbed onto the roof but unfortunately slipped and made contact with a live electric wire.
Despite all rescue efforts, Mithun could not be saved.
The State Education Minister, V. Sivankutty, expressed his condolences, stating, "This is a sad day as we have lost one of our own."
"I have instructed senior officials in my department to visit the school and provide a report. Action will be taken against those who neglected their duties," Minister Sivankutty added.
He also mentioned that all state-run schools must submit a fitness certificate before each academic year, and they will investigate whether this school complied.
Local legislator Kovoor Kunjumon assured that appropriate measures would be enacted against those who failed in their responsibilities.
K. Krishnankutty, the State Electricity Minister, has requested the Chief Electrical Inspector to compile a report, ensuring that those at fault will face repercussions. Meanwhile, the school staff are reeling from shock.
Shaji Thomas, Executive Engineer at the site, defended the Electricity Board, stating they had acted appropriately.
"This line has been operational for over four decades, and the shed was constructed eight years ago. Just two days ago, our Assistant Engineer informed the school authorities that the Board was prepared to relocate the line, pending clearance from the school management. The school must ensure safety for areas where students can access the roof," Thomas explained.
