New Delhi, Nov 10 (NationPress) The head coach of the Indian women's cricket team, Amol Muzumdar, attributed a straightforward team discussion during the group phase of the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup as a pivotal moment in their successful journey. Following three consecutive defeats to Australia, South Africa, and England, India embarked on a remarkable unbeaten streak, ultimately claiming their first-ever World Cup title on home ground.
"After suffering losses to Australia, South Africa, and England, we held a very candid team meeting. I felt it was essential to have a blunt conversation with no filters, and I’m pleased that the players responded with enthusiasm.
“Despite the scoreboard reflecting defeats, we understood that we were performing well but failing to clinch victories. This realization became our turning point in the tournament," Muzumdar shared on JioStar.
In the aftermath of India’s emotional five-wicket semi-final victory against Australia, Muzumdar emphasized that the team’s long-term vision enabled them to refocus and excel in the final, where they triumphed over South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
"All the effort we put in over the past two years wasn’t solely for winning the semi-final against Australia on October 30th; it was aimed at reaching the World Cup final on November 2nd, 2025. Had we lingered in the joy of beating Australia, we might not have achieved our ultimate objective.
“I urged the team to set aside those celebrations and concentrate on the present. That mindset made November 2nd extraordinarily special as we fulfilled our dream of lifting the Women's World Cup trophy.
Muzumdar also honored the pioneers of Indian women’s cricket who participated in the team’s trophy celebrations, acknowledging their crucial role in paving the way for the current generation’s success.
"I thoroughly enjoyed witnessing Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and our players celebrate by presenting the trophy to their senior counterparts who contributed to the growth of women’s cricket. We must honor our past to secure our future.
“Full credit belongs to trailblazers like Jhulan Goswami, Mithali Raj, Anjum Chopra, Reema Malhotra, and all the seniors from their era; hats off to them for establishing the groundwork for this Women's World Cup achievement," he concluded.
