Bhubaneswar, July 10 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained Akhilesh Kumar Verma, the Chief Manager (Mining) of Mahanadi Coal Limited (MCL) located in the Basundhara Area of Sundargarh district, Odisha, as he was caught accepting a bribe of Rs. 20,000 from an individual. This bribe was intended to facilitate the release of compensation amounting to Rs 11.37 lakhs for a land oustee, as reported by the agency in a press release on Thursday.
The investigation began following a complaint from Ranjan Padhan, a resident of the Hemagiri area in Sundargarh. Padhan reported that Verma initially requested Rs 40,000 to assist in releasing financial compensation owed to Sujan Patta, whose house in Jhumpurunga fell within the Hemagiri police jurisdiction.
After negotiations, Verma agreed to lower his demand to Rs 30,000. Despite his hesitations, Patta paid Rs 10,000 as the first installment on June 3. Subsequently, Verma continued to pressure Padhan for the remaining bribe amount.
With no alternative, Padhan approached the CBI on Wednesday. The agency then set up a sting operation, resulting in Verma being caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.
According to the CBI, Verma was accused of demanding a total bribe of Rs 30,000 to facilitate the release of a compensation fund of Rs. 11,37,595, which was due to a relative of the complainant in connection with land acquisition.
