Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, seeking the death penalty for Sanjay Roy, the only convict in the horrific rape and murder of a junior woman doctor that occurred last August at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
Sources familiar with the situation revealed that this move by the CBI's special crime unit in Kolkata came as a directive from the agency's headquarters in Delhi.
Earlier in the day, the CBI opposed a petition from the West Bengal government in the Calcutta High Court that contested the January 20 verdict of a special court in Kolkata, which sentenced Roy to life imprisonment. The state government has also requested the death penalty for the convict.
The CBI argued that the state government lacks the legal standing to file such an appeal.
The CBI's legal representative stated that only the CBI, as the primary investigative body, and the victim’s family could file such a plea in a higher court, while the state government is not a party to the case.
A source indicated that the Calcutta High Court will consider whether the state government’s petition is admissible on January 27.
To recap, the body of the junior woman doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9, 2024, prompting an initial investigation by the Kolkata Police.
The Kolkata Police were the first to apprehend Roy; however, after five days, the investigation was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
