Chennai, June 19 (NationPress) Financial cybercrimes are escalating in Chennai, with local residents suffering an alarming loss of Rs 218.5 crore to con artists from January to May 2025.
As reported by the Greater Chennai Police, the total number of cybercrime complaints during this timeframe reached 4,357, which is nearly 500 more than the 3,888 cases documented in the same period last year.
In spite of the rising incidents, city police succeeded in freezing Rs 48 crore of the stolen funds and managed to return Rs 10.45 crore to victims after completing the necessary legal procedures. This marks a notable improvement compared to 2024, when Rs 182 crore was lost, with only Rs 6.52 crore recovered.
Authorities attribute this year’s better recovery rate to a directive from the Madras High Court issued in July 2024, which clarified that merely registering a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) is enough to start the process of reversing frozen funds.
Following this order, the Chennai Police have streamlined their procedures to assist victims more effectively. However, officials stressed the importance of quick reporting.
“The golden hour — the initial few hours post-fraud — is vital for freezing the stolen funds and enhancing recovery chances,” stated a police official.
This year, 59 individuals have been apprehended in connection with financial cybercrimes — 42 from Tamil Nadu and 17 from other states.
The predominant types of fraud reported include online trading scams, digital impersonation of law enforcement, and bogus part-time job offers.
Victims have frequently lost several lakhs of rupees in these fraudulent activities.
In response, the Chennai Police have amplified their public awareness initiatives, specifically targeting students, employees, and the broader community.
These initiatives encompass educational sessions at schools, outreach in workplaces, and public service short films featuring Tamil actors Yogi Babu and Ashok Selvan.
City Police Commissioner A. Arun urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities without delay.
For financial fraud cases, citizens are encouraged to call the helpline 1930, file a complaint via www.cybercrime.gov.in, or visit the nearest cybercrime police station. “Timely action can significantly impact the chances of apprehending fraudsters and recovering lost funds,” emphasized the Commissioner.
