Will the Renovated Chilakoor Tunnel Boost Tourism and Navigation in Kerala?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 21 (NationPress) Kerala’s water-based tourism is poised to experience a remarkable enhancement with the revitalization of the iconic Chilakoor Tunnel located in Varkala. This initiative is part of the Akkulam–Chettuva Waterway project, which focuses on rejuvenating inland navigation and fostering tourism.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officiate the inauguration of Phase I of this waterway project at Chilakoor Beach Park, representing a significant event in the state’s efforts to develop its inland waterways.
The 350-meter-long Chilakoor Tunnel, constructed during the historic Travancore era, once played a crucial role as an inland navigation route for transporting passengers and goods throughout southern Kerala.
This tunnel has been meticulously restored to a navigable state under the state's inland waterways development strategy and is anticipated to function as both a viable waterway and a tourist hotspot.
The restoration project was executed by Kerala Waterways Infrastructure Limited, a collaboration between the Kerala government and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL).
Officials have emphasized that the restoration process was handled with care to maintain the historical essence of the tunnel, ensuring that its original architectural features were preserved.
To celebrate the inauguration, CIAL will launch electric boat tours through the tunnel, accompanied by a light-and-sound show designed to enrich the tourism experience.
This light-and-sound installation, developed at a projected cost of Rs 4.5 crore, will narrate visual stories related to the life and teachings of the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru and his connection to Varkala.
Officials noted that this visual experience employs advanced projection and mapping technologies within the tunnel, providing visitors with an immersive experience.
Tourists will journey through the tunnel on a specially designed 20-seater electric boat developed by a Kochi-based startup.
This vessel is equipped with onboard audio-visual systems and runs on battery power, promoting eco-friendly and sustainable tourism practices.
Additionally, supporting infrastructure, including a boat jetty and enhancements to the beach park area, has been developed as part of this project.
The 280-km Akkulam–Chettuva Waterway, stretching along Kerala’s coastline, is a vital element of the West Coast Canal renovation initiative.
Beyond tourism, this project is also expected to improve inland transport and logistics while promoting environmentally sustainable mobility solutions throughout the state.
