Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 25 (NationPress) The government of Kerala has laid out a visionary plan for the tourism sector titled “Vision 2031,” with Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal emphasizing the vast opportunities in specialized tourism segments.
During a state-level workshop held at Marian College in Kuttikkanam, the minister stated that the government is launching initiatives designed to propel tourism forward significantly.
“Tourism is a top priority in the State Budget,” Balagopal asserted, pointing out prospects in heli-tourism, health tourism, beach tourism, MICE tourism, destination weddings, cruise tourism, and pilgrimage tourism.
He mentioned that Kerala can provide experiences that are on par with global tourist destinations, while the region's air quality and natural environment are notable advantages.
The minister also discussed the economic significance of tourism, highlighting that domestic tourism alone generates over Rs 5,000 crore and constitutes 12 percent of the state's GDP.
“Enhancing public spaces and infrastructure, including flyovers and improved roads in destinations like Munnar and Wayanad, will further fortify the sector. The government’s role is to facilitate sustainable tourism development,” he remarked.
Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas introduced the Vision 2031 policy document, mentioning that Idukki has seen the highest influx of foreign tourists post-COVID.
“Kerala has outperformed the national average in attracting international visitors. Munnar, in particular, has set records for both domestic and international tourism,” he noted.
He characterized Vision 2031 as a strategic plan for the future of tourism, encouraging every citizen to act as a brand ambassador for the state.
Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, who chaired the event, stated that Kerala has successfully rolled out an innovative and globally recognized tourism policy.
“Tourism growth has made a significant contribution to the GDP, and the Vision 2031 seminar will boost Idukki’s tourism potential,” he added.
Tourism Secretary K. Biju shared achievements from the last nine years, while the workshop’s sessions will delve into eight themes, focusing on responsible, inclusive, experiential, and regenerative tourism, policy design, skill development, destination planning, marketing and branding, enhancing visitor experiences through technology, cultural and heritage tourism, adventure tourism, and investment prospects.
