Kolkata, March 29 (NationPress) The All India Congress Committee (AICC) revealed candidates for 284 of the 294 Assembly seats in West Bengal on Sunday, ahead of the elections slated for next month, which will occur in two phases.

As anticipated, the party selected Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the former state Congress president and a five-time Lok Sabha member, to contest from the Baharampur Assembly seat in his home district of Murshidabad.

Mausam Benazir Noor, a former Rajya Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress who recently rejoined Congress, has been nominated to represent the Malatipur Assembly seat in her home district of Malda.

Ali Imran Ramz, also known as Victor, who has faced allegations of domestic violence from his estranged wife, will be contesting from the Chakulia Assembly seat in north Dinajpur. Victor previously served as a two-time legislator for All India Forward Bloc in Chakulia, holding office from 2011 to 2016 and again from 2016 to 2021, but he was defeated in the 2021 elections.

Having joined Congress prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he also ran for the Raiganj Lok Sabha seat but was unsuccessful.

Rohon Mitra, the son of the late Somendra Nath Mitra, a former state Congress president in West Bengal, has been announced as the candidate for the Ballygunge Assembly constituency in South Kolkata.

Since the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections, Congress and the Left Front have competed under a seat-sharing arrangement, which extended to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, in 2021, neither party managed to secure a single seat in the state Assembly.

This time around, Congress has opted to break away from the Left Front and will contest independently across all 294 Assembly constituencies. The announcement of candidates for 284 constituencies was made public on Sunday.

At the time of this report, there was no information available regarding when the Congress leadership would disclose the candidates for the remaining 10 Assembly seats.

Point of View

The Congress party's announcement of candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections signifies a strategic shift as they aim to strengthen their foothold in the state. The decision to contest independently, separating from the Left Front, suggests a renewed focus on reclaiming lost ground in a competitive political environment.
