Kolkata, Jan 3 (NationPress) Mausam Benazir Noor, a sitting Rajya Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress and a former two-time Congress Lok Sabha representative from the Maldaha (Uttar) constituency in the minority-inhabited Malda district of West Bengal, has officially rejoined India's oldest political party on Saturday.

Her return to the historic party occurred at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi, witnessed by prominent figures including Jairam Ramesh, the Congress General Secretary of Communications, Golam Ahmed Mir, the party's central coordinator for West Bengal, and Suvankar Sarkar, the State Congress President.

Among those present during Noor's reintegration was Isha Khan Chowdhury, the only Congress Lok Sabha member from West Bengal and Noor's first cousin.

Chowdhury currently represents the Maldaha (Dakshin) constituency.

Mausam Benazir Noor is the daughter of the esteemed Rubi Noor, a veteran and four-time Congress legislator, and the niece of the esteemed Congress leader and former Railways Minister in the cabinet of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Abu Barkat Ataur Ghani Khan Chowdhury, who is often referred to as the architect of 'Modern Malda'.

She first secured a seat in the Lok Sabha from Maldaha (Uttar) in 2009 at the age of 29, making her the second-youngest member at that time.

She was re-elected from the same constituency in 2014.

Prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she switched to the Trinamool Congress and ran as the ruling party candidate from Maldaha (Uttar).

However, in 2024, she faced defeat against Khagen Murmu, a two-time BJP Rajya Sabha member, leading to her appointment to the Rajya Sabha by the Trinamool Congress.

After her induction into the Congress on Saturday, Mausam stated to the media that she had already submitted her resignation from the Trinamool Congress to party leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"My resignation letter as a Rajya Sabha member is also prepared and will be submitted on Monday," she mentioned.

"I chose to rejoin Congress motivated by my uncle, Ghani Khan Chowdhury, and my mother, Rubi Noor. They dedicated their lives to serving the people of West Bengal, particularly those in Malda," she added.

Her cousin, Isha Khan Chowdhury, expressed his happiness in welcoming his cousin back into the party, stating, "It was the desire of the people of Malda that she return to Congress, and she has fulfilled that wish."

As of now, the Trinamool Congress has not issued any comments regarding Mausam Benazir Noor's departure from the party.
