CPI-M Demands Action from EC Against Vijay for MCC Breach Amid Religious Visits
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 20 (NationPress) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has called upon the Election Commission of India to take decisive action against the renowned actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader Vijay for purportedly breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during his recent campaigning in Tamil Nadu's Tiruchy.
CPI-M State Secretary P. Shanmugam stated in a post on X that Vijay's actions included visiting religious sites and participating in activities that could be interpreted as soliciting votes while prominently displaying his political affiliation.
He emphasized that the MCC explicitly forbids candidates from requesting votes within religious venues such as temples, churches, and mosques, or from utilizing these locations for political messaging.
Shanmugam characterized the alleged infraction as serious and urged the electoral body to file a case against Vijay, advocating for necessary measures to maintain fairness during the ongoing Assembly election campaign. He asserted that any breach of the MCC compromises the integrity of the electoral process and sets a troubling precedent.
This controversy arises following Vijay’s visits to several religious sites in Tiruchy on Sunday as part of his campaign activities. His first destination was St Antony’s Church on Wireless Road, where he offered prayers in a notably symbolic act, reportedly crawling on his knees down the aisle. He later had a brief interaction with the parish priest before moving on. Vijay then visited Noorul Hudha Mosque in K.K. Nagar, where he prayed and sought blessings from clerics. His final stop was the Pachanachiyamman temple in Kottapattu, where he prostrated before the deity, completing a sequence of visits that showcased outreach across various faiths.
The leader of TVK is contesting in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from both Perambur and Tiruchy East constituencies, positioning himself as a significant contender in this multi-faceted electoral battle.
Although his visits have garnered attention for their religious inclusivity, they have also ignited political backlash and legal examination regarding compliance with election regulations.
As of now, the Election Commission has not publicly responded to the allegations.
