BJP Accuses Trinamool of MCC Breach in Bally with Religious Event; EC Investigation Underway
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 13 (NationPress) Following allegations of a breach of the Model Code of Conduct by a Trinamool candidate who reportedly organized religious events, officials from the Election Commission visited Bali in Howrah district to investigate the claims, as confirmed by Commission officials on Monday.
The BJP has accused Trinamool candidate Kailash Mishra from Bali of orchestrating a 'naam-sankirtan' event with the intent of swaying voters. Notably, the candidate's name was prominently featured at the 'sankirtan' gathering.
Upon receiving the complaint, election officials, accompanied by central forces, inspected the 'sankirtan' event on Sunday evening. They inquired about the necessary permits for the event.
In response to this incident, the Trinamool party has directed criticism towards the BJP.
As the polling date draws near, tensions are escalating in Bali.
BJP candidate Sanjay Singh has alleged that his opponent hosted a religious event near the Trinamool office, blatantly ignoring the Election Commission's regulations.
The stage banner prominently displayed the name of the Trinamool candidate.
Per Election Commission guidelines, candidates are prohibited from organizing religious events without prior special permission.
After the complaint was lodged, the Commission officials sought to verify whether the organizers had obtained the necessary administrative consent.
A Trinamool representative indicated that candidate Kailash spoke to the Commission officials, who stated that the event would need to be halted if no permission was granted.
Kailash contended that the BJP is attempting to undermine the religious sentiments of the community for political advantage. He asserted, "They are leveraging the Election Commission and the administration to impede our event. The local populace has engaged with the religious gathering. The BJP is opposing it."
Local sources report that the event continues, and a resolution on the situation is pending.
However, a BJP leader has claimed that hosting a religious event constitutes a violation of the Model Code of Conduct currently in effect for the Assembly elections. The Bally constituency in Howrah district is set to vote in the second phase on April 29.
