Trinamool Congress Alleges MCC Breach by Humayun Kabir, Urges EC Action
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 16 (NationPress) The ruling Trinamool Congress of West Bengal has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing former party legislator Humayun Kabir, who has established his own political party to participate in the forthcoming Assembly elections, of breaching the Model Code of Conduct.
In a communication sent to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state, a copy of which is available with IANS, Trinamool has charged Kabir with making derogatory remarks about several leaders of the ruling party, including General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The complaint includes a video from a press conference held by Kabir, where he was heard making these remarks.
Trinamool argues that Kabir's statements represent a clear violation of the MCC, which prohibits candidates from engaging in activities or making remarks that may be harmful to the personal lives of individuals or could be deemed malicious or offensive to decency and morality.
Furthermore, the complaint claims that Kabir's comments violate Sections 356, 351, and 174 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
The Trinamool has urged the Commission to issue a show-cause notice to Kabir for his alleged MCC infringement, instruct the relevant investigative agency to promptly file a First Information Report (FIR) against him, and to take strict and exemplary action against him.
Recently, the Trinamool also released a video clip alleging that Kabir engaged in a Rs 1,000 crore deal with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to manipulate minority votes in the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal.
In response, Kabir dismissed the video as artificial and generated by AI technology. The BJP leadership has similarly denied any agreement with Kabir.
Following the video's release, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, announced its decision to withdraw from its previously declared alliance with Kabir and his party.
