BJP Takes Action Against TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee for MCC Violations
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 5 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday against Kalyan Banerjee, a senior advocate and four-time Lok Sabha member from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The BJP accuses Banerjee of making “inciteful, derogatory, hateful, and provocative statements”, which allegedly breach the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
In a letter directed to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the BJP claims that Banerjee's recent public comments targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah—who stated he would remain in the state for 15 days—are a part of a troubling pattern of inflammatory rhetoric.
To substantiate their claims, the BJP has included a video clip showcasing Banerjee's controversial remarks.
The complaint letter highlights that Banerjee's statements are not isolated but part of a broader, ongoing strategy employed by TMC officials to engage in hostile and aggressive discourse. This conduct aims to create an atmosphere of fear, polarization, and animosity through inflammatory remarks, particularly against Union Minister Amit Shah. The BJP asserts that the repeated derogatory statements made by TMC functionaries reflect an intent to undermine the BJP's reputation.
The BJP’s leadership believes that Banerjee’s comments were made with the consent and guidance of TMC leadership, indicating a systemic disregard for the MCC.
In their letter to the CEO, the BJP has requested that the Commission hold Banerjee accountable for violating the MCC and call for the immediate removal or censorship of the disputed video from public access.
Furthermore, the BJP has urged the Commission to impose strict restrictions on Banerjee and other TMC officials to prevent any similar statements in the future and to initiate appropriate legal actions against them.
