Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 16 (NationPress) On Thursday, the West Bengal faction of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing the Trinamool Congress of persistently distributing defamatory, manipulated, and AI-generated video content aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The BJP asserted that the videos presented fabricated and distorted information, intentionally designed to mislead voters and skew electoral perceptions through deceptive tactics.
Furthermore, the party urged the Commission to promptly instruct the Trinamool Congress to remove these videos from all social media channels and to issue a show-cause notice to the ruling party.
In a separate complaint, the BJP accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of making misleading, false, and inflammatory remarks regarding electronic voting machines (EVMs) and VVPAT machines.
The BJP's complaint highlighted that the Chief Minister claimed the BJP was attempting to manipulate the electoral process with the assistance of the ECI.
“She specifically alleged that in case of EVMs and VVPAT machines malfunctioning, election officials would not replace them but would instead ‘insert a chip’ into them, making voters wait during such manipulation,” the complaint detailed.
The BJP requested the Commission to take appropriate action against the Chief Minister for her allegations and to issue a directive preventing her from making further false and misleading claims about EVMs and VVPATs.
Additionally, on the same day, the West Bengal BJP lodged a third complaint with the ECI concerning an alleged attack on the convoy of the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, by Trinamool Congress supporters at Bally in Howrah district during his campaign roadshow on Wednesday evening.
In the letter, the BJP reported multiple recent incidents in West Bengal where BJP leaders and members faced physical assaults in Kolkata and nearby districts, were obstructed from conducting lawful campaign activities, threatened, and had their party materials vandalized, all while being denied adequate police protection despite having prior permissions.
The BJP urged the Commission to ensure that FIRs are filed against all involved in the Bally incident and to enforce a strict presence of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in sensitive areas to ensure a fair electoral environment.
