Kolkata, April 15 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has accused the Election Commission of India of conducting a “targeted witch-hunt” by implementing vehicle checks on its leaders while seemingly overlooking similar actions involving members of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In a social media post shared on their official X handle, the Trinamool Congress highlighted a video of BJP leaders allegedly caught with unaccounted cash and questioned the fairness of the Election Commission's actions. They stated, “A WhatsApp circular from the Election Commission has mandated intrusive checks on all protectees of the Trinamool Congress, except for the Chief Minister, including the spouse of Shri @abhishekaitc. Meanwhile, the same Commission remains silent when BJP leaders are caught with cash. What is the reason for this selective scrutiny?”

IANS has not been able to independently verify the content of the video in question.

The TMC expressed concerns over why the convoys of BJP ministers do not face the same level of scrutiny as those of Trinamool leaders. They asked, “Why are the convoys of Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and other BJP leaders not being stopped for checks on illicit funds being funneled into Bengal? What kind of immunity shields them? Nothing, except the fact that the Election Commission appears to be their personal ally.”

On Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress claimed that the Election Commission had directed Flying Surveillance Teams (FSTs), preparing for the upcoming two-phase West Bengal Assembly elections, to inspect the vehicles of all TMC leaders and their immediate family members, excluding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The directive reportedly also included general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and his wife, Rujira Narula Banerjee. The party also shared a screenshot of what they claimed was a WhatsApp message from the poll body detailing these directives.

This message purportedly indicated that the Election Commission had concerns about potential money movement disguised as activities like medical camps or blood donation drives and instructed that heightened checks be applied to TMC leaders, ministers, and their families.

However, IANS was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the WhatsApp message circulated to various media outlets.

In response, the TMC has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, urging them to ensure that family members of TMC leaders are not subjected to harassment during these checks.
