Kolkata Police Interrogates Trinamool Candidate Over BJP Office Vandalism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 6 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police issued a notice on Monday evening to interrogate Trinamool Congress MLA Ratna Chatterjee, who is also a candidate in the ongoing elections, regarding an incident of vandalism at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office located in the Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency on the southern fringes of Kolkata.
Earlier that day, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed against her at the local Parnasree Police Station following a complaint lodged by the BJP.
The FIR was initiated under the directives of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which is overseeing the general and police administration in West Bengal, as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is active during the vital two-phase Assembly elections later this month.
The West Bengal BJP previously alerted the ECI that a contingent of Trinamool Congress supporters, led by Chatterjee, executed an unprovoked assault on a local BJP office in Behala (Paschim) on Sunday night, resulting in considerable unrest in the area until early Monday morning.
During the altercation, there were clashes between supporters of the BJP and Trinamool Congress. Indranil Khan, the BJP candidate for the Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency, was present at the scene.
Subsequently, following his leadership, BJP supporters organized protests outside the local Parnasree Police Station and lodged a formal complaint against Chatterjee.
The BJP further escalated the issue to the Chief Electoral Officer's office and the Commission, leading to the filing of an FIR against Chatterjee, after which she received a notice for questioning.
Although Chatterjee is the outgoing Trinamool Congress representative for the adjacent Behala (Purba) constituency, she has been nominated this time for Behala (Paschim), where the previous five-time party legislator was Partha Chatterjee, a former West Bengal Education Minister and former Secretary General of the Trinamool Congress.
This election cycle, the Trinamool Congress opted not to re-nominate him due to his involvement in a multi-crore cash-for-school-jobs scandal, which resulted in him spending over three years in jail, with his current status being out on bail.
