FIR Against Trinamool Congress Candidate Ratna Chatterjee for BJP Office Vandalism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 6 (NationPress) A first information report (FIR) has been filed against Trinamool Congress MLA Ratna Chatterjee, who is also the party's candidate in the upcoming elections, due to an alleged act of vandalism at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office located in the Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency, situated in the southern suburbs of Kolkata.
This FIR was recorded under the directive of the Election Commission of India (ECI), which currently oversees general and police administration in West Bengal, as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in effect during the critical two-phase Assembly elections scheduled for later this month, as confirmed by an official from the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office.
Previously, the West Bengal BJP had lodged a complaint with the ECI, alleging that a group of Trinamool Congress supporters, led by Chatterjee, instigated an unprovoked assault on a local BJP office in Behala (Paschim) on Sunday night, resulting in heightened tensions in the area until early Monday morning.
During the fracas, there were confrontations between supporters of the BJP and Trinamool Congress. The BJP candidate for the Behala (Paschim) Assembly seat, Dr. Indranil Khan, was present at the scene. Subsequently, under his guidance, BJP supporters protested outside the local Parnasree Police Station and filed a formal complaint against Chatterjee.
The BJP also escalated the issue to the CEO’s office and the Commission, leading to the lodging of an FIR against Chatterjee as per the ECI's orders.
Chatterjee has refuted the allegations, claiming that the unrest was provoked by BJP supporters who removed and destroyed her party's posters and festoons. She has also filed a counter-complaint against the BJP at Parnasree Police Station.
Although Chatterjee is currently the outgoing Trinamool Congress legislator from the adjacent Behala (Purba) constituency, this time she has been nominated from Behala (Paschim). Previously, the constituency was represented by Partha Chatterjee, a former West Bengal education minister and secretary-general of the Trinamool Congress. However, the party chose not to re-nominate him due to his involvement in the multi-crore cash-for-school job scandal, for which he was imprisoned for over three years and is currently out on bail.
