Trinamool Congress Protests Intensify Outside CEO's Office Over Voter Registration Claims
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 2 (NationPress) A significant clash arose outside the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal on Thursday as Trinamool Congress members and their supporters organized a protest in response to various accusations surrounding Form 6.
The demonstration commenced on Tuesday and escalated on Thursday, prompting a substantial presence of police and central forces in the vicinity to maintain order.
Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, accused the BJP of including names from other states, such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, into West Bengal's voter registry through Form 6.
He voiced these allegations during his visit to the CEO’s office on Monday.
Banerjee claimed that BJP representatives had entered the commission carrying bags full of Form 6. Consequently, an FIR was lodged at the Hare Street police station regarding this matter.
Later, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also highlighted this concern by writing to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
She accused the BJP, in collusion with the Election Commission, of attempting to infiltrate Bengal’s voter list with individuals from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Following these claims, Trinamool supporters and activists rallied outside the CEO’s office. However, the commission issued a stern warning regarding the protests, stating, “Such anti-social activities will not be tolerated.”
On Tuesday night, Trinamool activists gathered outside the CEO's office, conducting a sit-in protest. Police engaged with the protesters, who later moved a short distance away.
As tensions resurfaced on Wednesday morning, the area remained charged with allegations concerning Form 6.
Consequently, a significant police and central forces presence was established at the location, with barricades set up to restrict access to the CEO's office. The situation stayed tense until the latest reports came in.
