Mamata Banerjee Alleges BJP's Voter List Manipulation in West Bengal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 31 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has reached out to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing a scheme aimed at contaminating the West Bengal voters' list with non-residents, allegedly involving the BJP and the Election Commission.
Banerjee shared the letter on social media, stating she had penned it in her role as the chair of the Trinamool Congress.
“I have addressed the Chief Election Commissioner of India regarding my serious apprehensions concerning a significant conspiracy threatening the democratic rights of Bengal's populace,” she stated.
She claimed the BJP is trying to implement tactics similar to those used in other states.
“BJP operatives have been apprehended while submitting thousands of fraudulent Form 6 applications at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, aiming to distort the Bengal voter list by including outsiders. This is a clear attempt at ‘voter hijacking’—the same unscrupulous tactics that the BJP has executed in Maharashtra and Delhi,” she asserted.
Banerjee further stated, “Currently, over 60 lakh legitimate voters' identities are being scrutinized—while the flawed SIR process has already resulted in more than 200 casualties. The Election Commission of India seems suspiciously eager to approve this batch of fraudulent applications behind closed doors. This action is not only illegal and contradictory to the directives of the Hon’ble Supreme Court but also represents a direct threat to the integrity of free and fair elections in Bengal.”
She urged the Election Commission to guarantee that no ineligible voters are included in the electoral rolls following the official release of the final list on February 28, 2026.
“I demand that the Election Commission of India immediately cease this undemocratic process, rigorously follow the directives of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, and ensure that no fraudulent voters are added to the rolls post-publication of the final voter list on February 28, 2026. Bengal will not permit its democracy to be compromised in broad daylight. The citizens of Bengal are observant,” she declared.
In her correspondence, Banerjee noted, “We are currently witnessing what seems to be yet another coordinated effort by the BJP, in collaboration with the ECI, to undermine the democratic rights of the populace. Reliable reports suggest that a substantial number of Form 6 applications are being filed by BJP agents at the office of the Chief Electoral Officer and in various districts.”
She added, “These applications appear to be more than just standard requests for voter inclusion; they seem to be a calculated maneuver to incorporate non-residents into the electoral roll. There are significant concerns that these applications may involve individuals without legitimate ties to Bengal and who do not genuinely reside in the state.”
According to her, similar tactics were noted during elections in Bihar, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Delhi.
“If these allegations are accurate, such actions would be illegal, unconstitutional, and fundamentally undemocratic, indicating malicious intent. This is not the expected behavior from a constitutional authority. The public deserves transparency and the safeguarding of their voting rights,” she concluded.
