Mamata Banerjee Accuses BJP of Manipulating Voter Rolls Ahead of Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 8 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed on Sunday that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state, which is gearing up for elections, was designed to benefit the BJP in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
While speaking to party supporters from her protest site at Esplanade, CM Banerjee asserted that this initiative led to the removal of numerous voters' names from the electoral lists.
She emphasized that despite the backing of the Election Commission, the BJP would fail to secure a victory in the Assembly elections. “The citizens of Bengal will respond appropriately to their attempts to infringe upon their rights,” remarked CM Banerjee.
Questioning the validity of the voter deletions, she pointed out how individuals who participated in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections could suddenly be omitted from the electoral rolls after the SIR process.
“If someone ascended to the Prime Ministership after being elected by voters in 2024, how can a portion of those voters now be deemed ineligible? They previously exercised their right to vote, yet their names are being erased from the voters’ list,” she stated.
CM Banerjee also raised concerns regarding the Election Commission's role and insisted that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar should investigate the situation.
In reference to the resignation of former West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on March 5, she called for transparency regarding the reasons behind his departure.
“An inquiry is warranted. He had three years remaining in his term. Similarly, why did (former) Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had also served as Governor of West Bengal, resign from his position last July? Shouldn’t there be scrutiny into that too?” she questioned.
Additionally, CM Banerjee reiterated that the state government adhered to proper protocols and accused the BJP of unnecessarily politicizing the issue regarding the venue change for President Droupadi Murmu's event.
The Chief Minister clarified that if there was any mismanagement during the event, it was the responsibility of the private organizers and the Airports Authority of India, which managed the venue, not the state government.
