Is the CPI(M) Standing Firm on the Sabarimala Gold Theft Inquiry?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 25 (NationPress) The CPI(M) has once again expressed its unwavering support for the ongoing inquiry into the Sabarimala gold theft incident, dismissing charges from the Congress alleging that the Kerala government is trying to hinder the investigation by swaying the Special Investigation Team (SIT) designated by the High Court.
In a press briefing, CPI(M) State Secretary M.V. Govindan emphasized that the party’s stance on this matter has remained unchanged since its inception. “We have consistently backed the investigation in its entirety. Our position has not varied since the call for a Special Investigation Team was made. Anyone found guilty must be held accountable, without exception,” he stated.
Govindan referenced events from 2017 to highlight the gravity of the situation.
He mentioned that a flagpole at the Sabarimala temple was reportedly declared infested with termites under dubious circumstances and was subsequently replaced. Following this, the vachivahanam — a revered ceremonial idol at the temple's masthead — was allegedly handed over improperly to the tantri.
According to Govindan, this item was later retrieved from the tantri’s residence.
“These incidents prompted the court to order an investigation covering the last 20 years,” he remarked.
Refuting claims made by Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, Govindan asserted that the accusations regarding the mismanagement of the inquiry are unfounded.
He pointed out that the Kerala High Court is closely supervising the investigation, making any allegations of government interference premature.
“The inquiry is still in progress. There is no basis for blaming the state government at this stage,” he added.
Govindan also critiqued the Congress for its selective expressions of outrage. He noted the prime accused’s alleged meeting with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and remarked that the opposition has not provided a clear explanation regarding this matter.
He further recalled Congress MPs chanting slogans like “Pottiye kettiye” in Parliament, asserting that recent events have clarified who facilitated Unnikrishnan Potty.
“Let the inquiry reach its logical conclusion. We will continue to offer our full cooperation,” he stated.
On Saturday, Satheesan had accused the SIT of serious oversights in the investigation, claiming the team has failed to complete the inquiry and submit the charge-sheet in the allotted time. He also alleged that the probe team is under significant pressure from the state government.
