Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 20 (NationPress) The political climate in Kerala escalated dramatically on Tuesday as the BJP amplified its campaign regarding the Sabarimala gold theft incident, conducting protest marches towards the homes of two significant CPI(M) figures — former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran in Thiruvananthapuram and current Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan in Kottayam.
The protests emerged amidst increasing scrutiny regarding the alleged gold smuggling from the Sabarimala temple, prompting simultaneous investigations by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan raised questions about why Surendran had not yet been arrested, considering that the temple’s tantri had been detained in connection with the case, urging that the investigation should be transferred to the CBI.
He accused the SIT of intentionally postponing the filing of a charge sheet, allowing the accused to remain uncharged.
Surendran, who had previously faced questioning by the SIT, is under ongoing political scrutiny from Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who has consistently targeted the former minister since the case came to light.
BJP officials contend that political accountability should not be selective and demand an in-depth investigation into Surendran’s involvement.
In parallel, BJP activists marched to the office of Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan in Kottayam, resulting in confrontations with law enforcement.
Authorities employed water cannons multiple times to disperse demonstrators trying to breach barricades, leading to altercations and increased tension in the area.
During this political clash, Travancore Devaswom Board President K. Jayakumar stated the Board would fully assist the ED investigation, affirming its support for any efforts aimed at revealing the truth.
He characterized the irregularities at Sabarimala as a “systemic failure” and mentioned that corrective measures are being implemented to prevent future occurrences.
Jayakumar refrained from commenting on the case's specifics due to court directives but emphasized the necessity for enhanced transparency to rebuild devotees’ confidence in the Board’s operations.
Meanwhile, the SIT has intensified its efforts, with expert teams conducting detailed inspections at the temple.
While Vasavan publicly endorsed the SIT investigation — previously commended by the High Court — he raised concerns regarding the ED’s participation, citing previous incidents that called the agency’s credibility into question.
As investigations unfold across multiple fronts, the case continues to ignite a high-stakes political struggle with far-reaching implications for governance and accountability in Kerala.
