New Delhi, Nov 18 (NationPress) Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated that the team's regular captain Pat Cummins appears to be in remarkable form following a rigorous one-hour net bowling session at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Previously sidelined due to a back stress injury sustained after Australia's 3-0 triumph over the West Indies in July, Cummins has now shown promising signs of a comeback after completing a full bowling practice on Monday.
“I have to temper my excitement a bit. I observed him bowling in the nets yesterday… he looked ready to go!” Carey shared with SEN's The Run Home. “At this point, it’s likely less about bowling at 140(km/h), as he seemed to do that quite effortlessly. Instead, it’s about his overall game fitness.”
“Let’s hope he continues to feel good and prepares himself well. We’re all aware of his professionalism, so ideally we’ll see him back on the field sooner rather than later. There’s considerable depth in this squad, so if it’s not for the next match, hopefully, it will be soon.”
Cummins was witnessed consistently bowling on the practice wickets at Perth Stadium, spending nearly an hour and delivering close to 10 overs, which bolsters Australia’s hopes that he will be fit for the second Test in Brisbane.
The first Test kicks off on Friday in Perth, while the second Test in Brisbane is set to commence on December 4, providing Cummins with just over two weeks to aim for a return at the Gabba.
In Cummins' absence, Steven Smith will lead the Australian team in Perth, with Scott Boland and the uncapped Brendan Doggett stepping in for Cummins and fellow injury victim Josh Hazlewood.
