Sydney, March 26 (NationPress) Authorities have issued a warning regarding Tropical Cyclone Narelle, which is poised to strike the northwest coast of Australia as a severe Category 4 storm after traversing the nation.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) reported that at 5 a.m. Australian Western Standard Time on Thursday (2100 GMT on Wednesday), Tropical Cyclone Narelle was located 240 km from the northern coastline of Western Australia (WA) and was steadily gaining strength.

As of Thursday morning, the cyclone had reached Category 3 status, with expectations to escalate to Category 4 prior to impacting the remote Pilbara region starting Thursday night. This storm is anticipated to unleash extremely destructive wind gusts of up to 275 km per hour accompanied by heavy rain.

The WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has declared an emergency alert covering a 600 km stretch of coastline, advising residents to prepare for shelter and to ensure mobile devices are charged in the event of power outages.

"There is a significant threat to lives and properties as the cyclone approaches the vicinity," the alert stated.

The emergency alert area includes Karratha, the largest city in the Pilbara region, which has a population of around 22,000.

On Thursday, schools were closed, and both Qantas and Virgin Australia have suspended flights to and from Port Hedland, the second-largest urban center in the region and home to Australia's busiest tonnage port, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Tropical Cyclone Narelle previously impacted the far northern part of Queensland on March 20 as a Category 4 storm, followed by a Category 3 storm in the Northern Territory two days later, although it bypassed populated areas and only caused minimal damages.

Reports indicate that over 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain fell over a broad region in the Northern Territory during Narelle's passage. The Bureau of Meteorology has cautioned about potential minor to major flooding of various rivers. The storm has arrived amid a significantly wet season that has already led to damaging floods and evacuations.

Point of View

The emphasis is on the immediate threat posed by Tropical Cyclone Narelle, which has the potential to cause significant disruption and danger to lives and property in the Pilbara region of Australia. The public must heed warnings and prepare accordingly.
