Mamata Banerjee Confirms DA Arrears Payment for State Employees Starting March
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 15 (NationPress) West Bengal's Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, revealed on Sunday that the state government employees will receive their dearness allowance (DA) arrears, dating back to 2008, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
This announcement was shared through a statement on the Chief Minister's social media account on Sunday afternoon.
Interestingly, this news broke just an hour prior to the Election Commission of India disclosing the polling dates for five states and Union Territories, including West Bengal.
"I am pleased to inform you that our Maa-Maati-Maanush administration has fulfilled its commitment to all employees and pensioners, including thousands of teachers and non-teaching staff from our educational institutions, along with personnel from various grant-in-aid institutions such as panchayats, municipalities, and other local government bodies. They will begin to receive their ROPA 2009 DA arrears starting from March 2026, following the guidelines outlined in the notifications from our Finance Department," stated the Chief Minister.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ordered the state government to disburse 25 percent of the DA arrears for the period between 2008 and 2019 by March 31.
The court also directed the state government to adopt a phased strategy, in accordance with the apex court's instructions, to synchronize DA payments for employees with those of Central government employees, while addressing the arrears that have built up since 2008.
There has been a prolonged agitation regarding the pending dearness allowance in West Bengal. State government employees have been advocating for DA to be aligned with that of Central government employees under the 2009 pay structure, known as ROPA 2009, along with the owed arrears.
Earlier this month, state government employees organized a cease-work protest, accusing the state government of failing to comply with the Supreme Court's order.
