New Delhi, Sep 14 (NationPress) Former spinner Danish Kaneria has linked the diminished excitement surrounding the Asia Cup showdown between traditional rivals India and Pakistan to the declining quality of Pakistan cricket.
This time, for the first time in several years, there seems to be little anticipation for the cricket match between the neighboring countries, who have historically been fierce competitors on the field. This shift in sentiment can be traced back to a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists.
Following the Pahalgam attack, Indian cricket legends boycotted their World Championship of Legends match against Pakistan. Since the announcement of the Asia Cup schedule, discussions have resurfaced about whether India and Pakistan should compete in cricket, especially given their tense political ties.
Despite this, the BCCI has stated that it adheres to the central government's regulations that allow participation in international tournaments but prohibit bilateral series with Pakistan.
According to the notification from the Union Sports Ministry, India is permitted to face Pakistan in "international and multilateral events," yet is restricted from engaging in "bilateral sports events in each other's country."
“There’s no doubt that Indian feelings are hurt. India chose not to play the World Championship of Legends match, and there remains a lack of clarity on the situation. Moreover, the quality of Pakistan cricket has diminished, leading to the lack of excitement around this year’s India–Pakistan encounter,” Kaneria remarked to IANS.
The seasoned bowler expressed skepticism regarding Pakistan’s prospects against India in the Asia Cup, stating, “Currently, there is no competition.” He highlighted that Pakistan's squad is comprised largely of young players, with key figures like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan absent. Conversely, India boasts a robust and deep batting order, led by Suryakumar Yadav.
“Pakistan is facing defeats against lesser teams, and there are frequent changes to the lineup. This time, neither Babar Azam nor Rizwan is part of the squad... The state of the team is such that there are no established players right now; most are inexperienced,” Kaneria added.
He believes that even in defeat, Pakistan will claim they are focused on team rebuilding. “They will enter the Asia Cup, and even if they lose to India, they will assert they are still in the process of constructing a new team.”
“At this moment, there is no competition with India. The way India’s team, under first-time captain Shubman Gill, managed to level the series against England even without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma was a significant morale boost for India.
“In the Asia Cup, Suryakumar Yadav is at the helm. If you analyze India’s batting lineup, it is quite extensive. Therefore, I don't foresee any competition in this match,” he stated.
India commenced their campaign with an impressive nine-wicket victory over the UAE on Wednesday, while Pakistan kicked off their journey with a 93-run win over Oman on Friday.
