New Delhi, Sep 11 (NationPress) The former captain of India and World Cup champion, Kapil Dev, has shared his thoughts on the highly awaited clash between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup. He emphasized that people should refrain from escalating the situation, stating that "the government will perform its duties, and the players should focus on theirs".
Since the announcement of the Asia Cup schedule, a persistent discussion has arisen regarding the appropriateness of the India-Pakistan cricket match, especially in light of the tense political climate following the Pahalgam attack.
The BCCI has reiterated its obligation to adhere to the central government's guidelines, which allow participation in international tournaments but prohibit bilateral series with Pakistan.
Addressing the media on Thursday, Kapil Dev remarked, "Just go and win. Those whose job is to play should solely concentrate on playing - there’s no need for further discussion. Don’t make it a big issue. The government will handle its responsibilities, and the players should attend to theirs."
Since their last bilateral series in 2012–13, cricketing interactions between India and Pakistan have been stalled due to political and security issues. Now, their encounters are limited to ICC and ACC events.
India is the official host of the 17th edition of the Asia Cup, which kicked off on September 9. However, because of the ongoing tensions between the two neighboring countries, both teams have avoided playing on each other’s territory. Consequently, the tournament is being held in the United Arab Emirates, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the host cities.
India commenced their title defense with a decisive nine-wicket victory over the UAE, bowling them out for just 57 runs in 79 balls and chasing down the target in a mere 27 balls.
In response to India’s opening match win, Kapil Dev stated, "The team is exceptional and has achieved a remarkable victory. We hope they bring the trophy home."
India currently holds the title of the tournament after clinching the ODI edition of the continental championship in 2023.
