New Delhi, Sep 12 (NationPress) The former captain of India, Kapil Dev, has expressed his strong belief that the Men in Blue will emerge victorious against their longstanding rivals, Pakistan, in the highly awaited Asia Cup match this Sunday.
The team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, kicked off their tournament journey with an impressive nine-wicket victory against the UAE on Wednesday and is set to face the Men in Green at the Dubai International Stadium over the weekend.
“I firmly believe the Indian team will perform well and win; that’s my wish. Given their current form, victory seems likely,” Kapil Dev stated during a press event when discussing the upcoming clash.
This year marks the first time India enters a major multi-nation tournament without renowned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who retired from T20Is last year. Notably, this edition of the continental tournament is being held in T20 format as preparation for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year.
In response to their absence, the legendary all-rounder acknowledged their invaluable contributions to Indian cricket and encouraged the younger players to step up and fill the gap.
“They excelled during their time, and now it's the duty of the next generation to shine. The focus should be on the team rather than individuals; representing India is far more significant than any single player's status,” he emphasized, refraining from highlighting any standout player in the current squad.
On Thursday, Kapil Dev urged the public to avoid sensationalizing the situation, asserting that “the government will handle its responsibilities, and the players should focus on their game.”
“Simply go out there and win. Those whose job is to play should concentrate on that singular task—there’s no need for further commentary. Don’t blow this out of proportion. The government will fulfill its role, and the players must do theirs. The team looks strong and has achieved a commendable victory. We hope they bring the trophy home,” he remarked.
India stands as the defending champions of this tournament, having clinched the ODI version of the continental event in 2023.
