New Delhi, July 27 (NationPress) In the face of escalating uncertainty surrounding India’s match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is unable to withdraw from the continental tournament. Sources reveal that the highly anticipated clash between these fierce rivals will proceed as scheduled following the Indian board's approval during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting.
The ACC announced the Asia Cup schedule on Saturday, confirming that the league stage encounter between India and Pakistan is set for September 14, with both teams placed in Group A alongside UAE and Oman.
"The BCCI cannot back out from the tournament or the match at this point. This decision was reached during the ACC meeting. As India is the host nation, changes cannot be made at this stage. An official discussion led to this outcome, and the match will proceed as planned," BCCI insiders told IANS on Sunday.
Concerns surrounding the India-Pakistan matchup have intensified after the India Champions team, captained by Yuvraj Singh, opted out of facing the Pakistan Champions in Birmingham during the ongoing second season of the World Championship of Legends, resulting in the cancellation of that match.
This decision was influenced by the increased political tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
Despite these developments, the BCCI has yet to issue any statements regarding a potential boycott of Pakistan in the continental tournament following the Asia Cup schedule announcement.
Bringing an end to months of speculation, ACC president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi officially revealed the dates for the 17th edition of the Asia Cup on Saturday.
This tournament will be conducted in the T20 format, aligning with preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup, and will feature eight teams for the first time ever.
India and Pakistan are in Group A along with UAE and Oman, while Group B consists of Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.
The top teams from each group will progress to the Super Four stage, leading to the final, which raises the possibility of up to three encounters between India and Pakistan throughout the tournament.
India enters as the defending champions, having triumphed over Sri Lanka in the final of the 2023 edition.
