Zurich, Jan 2 (NationPress) Tragically, more than 40 individuals have lost their lives, while many others are still battling for survival due to a catastrophic fire that engulfed the 'Le Constellation' bar located in the Crans-Montana ski resort in Valais Canton, southwestern Switzerland, on New Year's Eve, as reported by Swiss authorities on Friday evening.
State Council President Mathias Reynard expressed deep sorrow, stating, "This is a tragedy for Switzerland, for Europe, and for the entire world." He also announced that January 9 will serve as a national day of remembrance for the victims.
As per the leading Swiss daily, Tages-Anzeiger, Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud confirmed that the investigation is focusing on the theory that the fire was sparked by sparklers. These sparklers, which are commonly available in supermarkets, did not necessitate a permit for indoor use.
In a press briefing, Pilloud elaborated, "The sparklers were ordinary ones, easily obtainable in any supermarket. The club did not need a permit to use them indoors. We are prioritizing the investigation into whether these sparklers caused the fire," the newspaper noted.
Pierre-Antoine Lengen, chief of the Valais cantonal police, emphasized that efforts are underway to swiftly identify the victims.
Located in the picturesque Swiss Alps, Crans-Montana is renowned as one of Switzerland's prime tourist spots, attracting visitors for skiing, snowboarding, golf, and various leisure activities.
The town is situated approximately two hours from the Swiss capital, Bern.
This incident follows another fire that occurred months prior at Switzerland's oldest luxury hotel in Geneva. The fire at the historic Four Seasons Hotel Des Bergues, established in 1834, resulted in multiple injuries.
