Following specific intelligence, DRI officials apprehended a traveler arriving from Bangkok on Thai Airways flight TG 317.
A thorough personal search resulted in the recovery of 14 gold bars of varying weights, totaling 6,735.42 grams. The gold, estimated at around Rs 6.30 crore, was cleverly hidden in the passenger's shoe.
“The concealment was ingenious, with the gold bars tucked away in the footwear of the traveler,” stated a DRI official.
During the interrogation, the passenger willingly revealed the name of the intended recipient of the smuggled gold. Consequently, the DRI detained the buyer as well.
“In his statement, the buyer acknowledged his role in the smuggling operation,” the official added.
Both the traveler and the buyer have been arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. The smuggled gold has been confiscated, and an extensive investigation is currently ongoing.
