Is the ED Investigating Money Laundering in the Tirupati Laddu Affair?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Directorate of Enforcement has initiated an investigation into the Tirupati laddu adulteration case by registering an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) concerning allegations of money laundering.
According to sources, this action was taken under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act against the identified suspects.
The investigation by the ED was prompted by charge sheets submitted by the CBI-led Special Investigation Team (SIT) related to the case.
There are serious allegations of hawala-based transactions involving the accused. Reports suggest that private dairy companies and intermediaries allegedly paid bribes through hawala channels to certain officials of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) to manipulate ghee tenders and quality approvals.
The focus of the ED's investigation will be the money trail and the involvement of the hawala network in these transactions.
The SIT submitted its charge sheet in a court in Nellore district on January 23, 2026, naming 36 individuals, including directors of dairy firms.
It is alleged that shell companies were employed in transactions amounting to approximately Rs 250 crore.
TTD officials allegedly accepted bribes to certify mixtures of vegetable oils and chemicals as genuine ghee.
The ED's investigation commenced shortly after the Andhra Pradesh government announced the formation of a one-man committee tasked with thoroughly examining a report from the SIT to initiate administrative actions against implicated individuals.
On February 5, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu revealed that the committee would identify failures and assign accountability.
Upon completion of its review, the government intends to take appropriate actions based on the findings, as stated by the Chief Minister.
The alleged adulteration is reported to have occurred between 2019 and 2024, during the tenure of the YSR Congress Party.
In response to the SIT's charge sheet, YSRCP claimed that the SIT had cleared them of wrongdoing, asserting that the ghee was not adulterated with animal fat as had been claimed by Chief Minister Naidu. Naidu condemned the adulteration as a serious violation of the devotees' trust, insisting that no report has absolved the YSRCP.
He also alleged that bathroom cleaners were used in the adulterated ghee meant for making laddus.
